According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, in 2016, there were more than 42,000 opioid-related overdose deaths in the United States, and 11.5 million people reported they had misused prescription opioids. Physical therapists and physical therapist assistants understand their role in a treatment plan for reducing pain, a large contributor to the misuse of opioids. However, we should also be active members of an expanded interprofessional role related to the prevention of opioid use disorder.
