Binding is an essential practice for many transgender, non-binary, and gender-diverse individuals, often performed to achieve improved congruence between an outward physical appearance and one’s gender identity. Given the typical frequency and duration of binding, negative binding-related symptoms such as thoracic or rib pain, shortness of breath, and postural changes may occur. Physical therapists have the necessary skills to evaluate and treat these negative sequelae. This session serves to provide a clinical example of how the Core Values of Inclusion, Excellence, and Social Responsibility can be applied in practice. Physical therapists should be the provider of choice for adverse binding-related symptoms, particularly given that physical therapists are equipped with the requisite skills of assessment and treatment to improve symptom-burden for individuals who bind. By improving clinical outcomes associated with binding-related sequelae, physical therapists can improve the cultural responsiveness of their practice and help address unmet rehabilitation needs in this population.
