Vision

The PT Proud vision is to foster an affirming physical therapy community where LGBTQIA2S+ people and allies of all ages and abilities can move, participate, and live fully with dignity, autonomy, and joy. 

Mission

The mission of PT Proud is to advance the health, mobility, and well-being of the LGBTQIA2S+ community by uniting allies and people of all sexualities and gender identities in the physical therapy profession through advocacy, policy reform, peer support, education, and affirming practice.

PT Proud

History

PT Proud, a Special Interest Group (SIG) under the APTA Academy of Leadership and Innovation (APTA ALI), was founded by joint efforts of DPT students and PT professionals, evolving from a Catalyst Group in 2017, to a Committee in 2018, to a SIG in 2023. Our journey began with our first presentation at CSM 2018 in New Orleans, and since then, we’ve continued to grow our membership and presence within the APTA. We are committed to improving healthcare access for LGBTQIA2S+ patients and allies, and empowering LGBTQIA2S+ practitioners and allies. Join us in creating a more inclusive future for all!

In June 2024, the PT Proud SIG challenged PTs, PTAs and students to submit short videos about what Pride Month meant to them. The theme, “Healing Through Reflection: Empower and Unite, PTs and PTAs,” emphasized the therapeutic and reflective nature of physical therapy, focusing on how the profession empowers individuals and fosters unity by improving physical health and well-being.
 
Winners received cash prizes and are featured on the PT Proud web page. Following are the winners:
