Today’s healthcare organizations are urgently called upon to provide ideal environments of care relative to safety and quality of patient outcomes and establish systematic processes which produce these results. Despite these goals, healthcare organizations continue to have high rates of injuries for all direct care providers and struggle with a comprehensive program that can address inherent risks. As mobility experts, physical therapists have unique and substantial opportunity to contribute to and participate in leading system change within a healthcare organization.
This session will identify current topics for successful outcomes in both caregiver and patient safety environments. Legislation and guidelines at both local and national levels pertaining to ergonomics and safety in healthcare will be reviewed. Attendees will learn the essential features of an effective safe patient handling and mobility program along with preparation to address common barriers to system change. After attending this session, you will be able to formulate a plan for transformative culture change in your organization by leveraging an effective safe patient handling and mobility program that can provide improvement in patient quality measures of fall and pressure ulcer reduction, early mobilization and decreased length of stay.
