About the Webinar

The Research Committee of the APTA Academy of Leadership and Innovation (formerly HPA The Catalyst) welcomes students, clinicians, and educators to join us for this free webinar. We will present tips to improve your chances of having your poster or platform proposal accepted for a future Combined Sections Meeting. Additionally, we will offer advice on developing competitive proposals for the APTA Academy of Leadership and Innovation  Research Grant ($15,000) and the APTA Academy of Leadership and Innovation  Community Grant ($5000). 

Presenter:

Celia Pechak, PT, PhD, MPH, is a Professor and Associate Program Director in the Doctor of Physical Therapy Program at The University of Texas at El Paso. She primarily teaches courses related to professionalism and acute care topics and focuses her research and service on projects related to preparing students to serve vulnerable and/or underserved populations. She currently chairs the Research Committee for the Academy of Leadership and Innovation. 

Rachel Prusynski, DPT, NCS, PhD(c), is a physical therapist, board-certified specialist in Neurologic Physical Therapy and a PhD Candidate in Rehabilitation Science at the University of Washington. Rachel's research leverages large datasets to examine intersections between health policy, rehabilitation processes, and patient outcomes in post-acute care. Her recent publications have focused on the influence of Medicare policy on therapist staffing, therapy practice, and patient outcomes in Skilled Nursing Facilities.

Rupal M Patel, PT, PhD, is an Associate Professor in the School of Physical Therapy at Texas Woman’s University (TWU) in Houston, Texas. In 2020, Dr. Patel was a co-recipient of a grant from HPA The Catalyst for a project titled "Effectiveness of a novel educational intervention to increase attitudes, knowledge, and skills of Doctor of Physical Therapy students' in addressing the social determinants of health."  Also, Dr. Patel's culturally tailored group-based community lifestyle modification program that she designed and implemented among South Asian Americans as part of her dissertation research has been included in a diabetes prevention inventory for providers by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid (CMS). She has also experience in presenting posters and platforms at national meetings and also mentoring students in writing proposals for funding, several of which have been funded.

Rachel Tappan, PT, DPT, NCS, is an Assistant Professor at Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine in the Department of Physical Therapy and Human Movement Sciences, where she teaches in the cardiopulmonary and neurologic PT courses. She also serves as the Assistant Chair of Education Research. Her current research is in the area of simulation-based mastery learning. Her clinical practice is in the outpatient setting at the Shirley Ryan AbilityLab.
